Ok so I have a confession… I’m an anime nerd. Yes, I’m a 28-year-old, career driven, African-American mom of 2, who loves anime. Shit, my first tattoo is a pic of Shenron wrapped around my leg. I thought about getting dragon balls but fuck that! Tattoos hurt. I mean, it didn’t stop me from getting more but anyways here’s my top 5 that I’ve watched last year.
Jujutsu Kaisen
This is probably my favorite thus far. Its funny, action packed, and the graphics are superb. The anime focuses on a high school student named Yuji Itadori, who swallows a rotting finger that belonged to a powerful demon, curse, or whatever and subsequently becomes possessed. Jujutsu Sorcerers sentence him to death by exorcism, but before that happens, he’s tasked with finding and consuming the Curse’s remaining fingers. Sounds basic enough but far from it. Also there are taking long asf to release the movie in the US. Like wtf is the hold up. Side bar: I fucking love Satoru! *Heart explodes*
Demon Slayer
This anime centers on Tanjiro as he becomes a demon slayer to avenge his family who was slaughtered by a demon and help his sister Nezuko who’s slowly turning into a demon. Lots of demon action. I’ll be honest it started out slow but by the end of the first season I was hooked. I went to see the movie which made me cry… I know I know its just a cartoon but I couldn’t help it. Now that season 2 has ended I may have to start reading the manga.
The God of High School
Ok so this one came out in 2020 but I just watched it and thought it was great. We are now in 2022 what’s the fucking hold up for season 2?? Does anyone know? Well this show is an adaptation of a webtoon focusing on Mori Jin, a Taekwondo specialist and a high school student who enrolled fighting tournament which seeks out for the best fighter among all high school students in Korea. I mean it’s a lot action and strong fighters… what’s not to like about it?
Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchu
This isn’t as popular as I thought it would be. I really enjoyed this show. It had a good amount of humor, lively characters, and the protagonist is strong. I like strong characters. It’s about a high school student Makoto Misumi who’s called into a fantasy world by the god Tsukuyomi, in order to be a hero. However, the goddess ruling the world isn’t as thrilled to have him there and kicks him to the edge of the world. Tsukuyomi declares that Makoto is free to find his own way after Makoto is abandoned by the other Goddess.
Fruits Basket The Final Season
9/10 times I watch action/adventure type anime so I thought I’d add this one in. I watched Fruit Basket when I was younger so I may be a little biased on this one. Is it really good? Who knows. But I enjoyed it. The synopsis is as followed according to My Anime List, Hundreds of years ago, the Chinese Zodiac spirits and their god swore to stay together eternally. United by this promise, the possessed members of the Souma family shall always return to each other under any circumstances. Yet, when these bonds shackle them from freedom, it becomes an undesirable burden—a curse. As head of the clan, Akito is convinced that he shares a special connection with the other Soumas. While he desperately clings to this fantasy, the rest of the family remains isolated and suppressed by the fear of punishment. Tooru Honda, who has grown attached to the Soumas, is determined to break the chains that bind them. Her companionship with the family and her friends encourages her to move forward with lifting the curse. However, due to confounding revelations, she struggles to find the tenacity to continue her endeavors. With time slowly withering away, Tooru contends with an uncertain future in hopes of reaching the tranquility that may lie beyond all this commotion.
